The voluntary community service of four Waimate district
residents has been recognised by the Waimate District Council
at its first civic awards.
Mayor John Coles (centre) is pictured with the recipients
(from left) Janet Williams, Bobbie Laurie, David Henshaw and
Valerie Johnston.
Mr Coles said the awards thanked volunteers for their
"selfless and untiring dedication".
David Henshaw has given more than three decades of community
service to organisations such as South Canterbury Rugby,
Southburn School committee, Southburn Bus Trust, Southburn
Amenities Society, Pareora River Management and the Aoraki
Water Trust.
Janet Williams has been a St John ambulance officer for many
years, and is also a pastor and chaplain.
Valerie Johnston has shared her accounting skills with
various groups for more than 30 years.
Bobbie Laurie has been involved with Meals on Wheels and
Bushtown and served on the White Horse Lions and Waimate
Promotions Committee, running the Waimate Information Centre
for 20 years.
For 10 years she has also been in charge of the book-a-rama,
the major fundraiser for the Waimate Historical Society.
