The next step towards regaining control over weeds at a major
Clutha wetlands will be taken later this month.
The Lake Waihola Waipori Wetland Society is holding a
workshop on weeds and plant restoration in which it aims to
give the community information on the current state and
management of weeds and native plants within the wetlands.
The workshop would also identify a common vision for the
future of weeds and native plants in wetlands and work
towards developing a management strategy and action plan
involving the community, landowners and stakeholders, the
Otago Regional Council's land information officer, Nicola
McGrouther, said.
The society was formed late last year.
"The overall vision of the group is to sustainably manage the
Lake Waihola Waipori wetlands and enhance the area for the
benefit of all communities of interest," Ms McGrouther said.
A key purpose of the workshop is to bring together
landowners, community, agencies and stakeholders to start
talking about how best to achieve long-term cohesive
management of weeds and willows in the wetlands and look at
ways of planting native species, too.
The workshop will be held at the Waihola Hall on Tuesday,
September 23 from 11am to 3pm.
The society recently adopted its strategic plan, which will
also be discussed at the workshop.
