Cheeky thieves steal Cathedral Caves gates

The gates to one of Clutha's most popular tourist attractions were removed in broad daylight in what police are calling a cheeky act of wilful damage.

Constable Murray Hewitson, of Owaka, said a vehicle would have been needed to remove the gates to the Cathedral Caves, near Tautuku, south of Papatowai.

The incident happened sometime between 10am and 4pm last Saturday, when the caves were open to the public.

Anyone who saw anything is asked to contact the Balclutha Police Station on (03) 418 0203.

•Const Hewitson is calling for the return of an inflatable boat taken from its moorings near Hina Hina on January 11.

The red boat, which has a grey stripe, had a Mercury 5 horsepower motor.

Const Hewitson said someone may have taken the boat for all the right reasons, believing it may have been inadvertently left by its owners in a public place where someone could steal it.

"At the moment, I will take the boat back, no questions asked," he said.
