The Rakiura Maori Land Trust is reviewing hunting operations
on its Stewart Island land, which may lead to cheaper hunting
on the island.
The trust, which holds almost 6% of the land mass of Stewart
Island, was reviewing charter boat operations to the island
with the aim of making it a more attractive product for
hunters, trust chairman Stephen Harteveld said The trust was
talking with charter boat operators, and wanted cheaper
transport options for hunters.
Two charter boat companies ran to the the trust-run area of
the island, and the trust earned a percentage of the fee.
"We are trying to keep costs down," he said.
No bookings were being taken while the review, expected to be
completed by the end of November, was under way, he said.
