Invercargill armed offenders squad members approach a house in Mataura yesterday afternoon.

A gang member allegedly brandishing a firearm sparked the armed offenders squad callout.

Police were called to an Albion St address following reports of a Mongrel Mob member presenting a firearm at another man, also believed to be a gang member, shortly after 1.30pm.

The area was cordoned off and a car was searched but no weapon was found, Senior Sergeant Steve Gregory, of Gore, said.

The nearby primary school was forced to close for the day, he said.

"The safety of the community is the paramount concern for the police in such situations and I apologise for any convenience caused," he said.

A 43-year-old Invercargill man turned himself in at the Invercargill Police Station at 4pm.

The man was helping police with their inquiries.
