Central Otago's newest police officers are looking forward to a change of lifestyle and a completely different policing environment from their last job, in South Auckland.

Sergeant Matthew Alley (36) and his fiancee, Constable Tamah Carson (28) started work yesterday based in Alexandra.

Sgt Alley is from Counties Manukau and has been policing in South Auckland for 12 and-a-half years.

He is the section supervisor for the five-strong police public safety team, which attends emergency calls and carries out proactive tasks, identifying risks such as motorists speeding around schools and acting to reduce those risks.

Const Carson, who was originally from Oamaru, has been policing in South Auckland for four years and will be a member of the public safety team in Alexandra.

''This will be a completely different policing experience than in South Auckland, where there was a real high volume of serious crimes dealt with at that station by eight sergeants and 64 constables, but I'm really looking forward to the new challenge,'' Sgt Alley said.

The couple have bought a 16ha lifestyle block near Alexandra.
