Residents respond to festival float concerns

Blossom festival organisers are ‘‘more confident'' about the number of trailers for floats and float-building spaces after offers from residents in the past week.

Last week, event manager Martin McPherson expressed concern about a potential shortage due to a predicted rise in float numbers for the 60th anniversary of the Alexandra Blossom Festival.

Residents had volunteered three trailers in the past week, he said.

‘‘One orchardist rang me up and offered a couple of orchard trailers.

‘‘I'm much more confident we'll have enough than I was a week ago. We currently have about 12 trailers.''

He received one call about an empty space for building floats, and was investigating others, he said.

It was too early to tell how many floats there would be, he said.

At a meeting last week ideas for themes were discussed, including ‘‘history of the blossom festival''.

One person had found a picture of a Swan Lake float from 1958 and was interested in re-creating it, he said.

A theme had not yet been decided upon.

The festival will be held from September 23 to October 9. The parade is on September 24.
