Queenstown firm Steve Rout Contracting Ltd is safe from
appeals to the Environment Court against its retrospective
consent to mine schist at Earnscleugh, near Alexandra.
A timeframe within which people could appeal the Central
Otago District Council's decision to grant consent closed
this week.
Environment Court staff at Christchurch had not received any
appeals when contacted.
Steve Rout Contracting was granted retrospective consent in
December last year to quarry schist at Earnscleugh, near
Alexandra.
The Central Otago Environmental Society made a submission
opposing the company's application for consent, stating it
would set a negative precedent for the district if granted.
An estimated 3000cu m of schist was extracted from 1ha of
private property near Fraser Dam.
