Woman charged after spectacular crash

The 20-year-old Arrowtown woman involved in a spectacular car crash in Arrowtown last month is likely to appear in the Queenstown District Court in September.

Constable Logan Dickie, of Queenstown, said the woman had been charged with drink-driving, dangerous driving and driving while forbidden.

The woman was driving a Toyota 4WD which ended up in a private swimming pool on the corner of Bedford and Berkshire Sts at 3am on July 27.

Police said she had been travelling at 80kmh in the 50kmh zone, and the car hit a traffic island, a fence, a shed and a stone barbecue before landing upright in the swimming pool, facing the direction she came from, with a piece of 100mm x 50mm (4in x 2in) wood through the front windscreen.

The woman received minor cuts and scratches as a result of the crash, which Arrowtown Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Garry Hall described as one of the worst crash scenes in the area for 24 years.

Const Dickie said he was unable to give the blood-alcohol reading yesterday and more charges were "possible".
