Charges after train boarded

Two teenage joyriders are facing charges after they boarded a train wagon stopped at a Balclutha crossing on Thursday night.

Concerned witnesses contacted police after watching the two 18-year-old men jump out of their car at the High St railway crossing and climb on board a container wagon of a stationary freight train shortly after 8pm.

"They did it for a bit of a laugh," Constable Judy Powell said.

The pair took photos of themselves while they stayed on the container wagons for a few minutes, but left the scene in the vehicle not long before police arrived.

Const Powell said the train had also continued on its journey and, if the pair had stayed on board as it moved, they would have been seriously injured.

"Potentially, it could have been disastrous," she said.

Witnesses were able to supply details of the pair's vehicle, and they were later located at a Clyde St address.

One of them had been charged with breaching bail conditions, and further charges were likely.
