Rehearsals are under way for the South Otago Theatrical Society's production of The Wizard of Oz , starring country sweetheart Vickie Evans. The Balclutha-based country singer will make her acting debut as Dorothy.
Miss Evans is no stranger to the limelight, winning the New Zealand Gold Guitar trophy this month in Gore. She also won the senior gospel and the New Zealand composition categories, and teamed up with Cameron Scott, of Cave, to win the senior duets.
She said it was a bit "full on" between show rehearsals, the recent Gold Guitar Awards and songwriting, but she was looking forward to everything coming together in August.
"It's my first show, really. I've been in one once before when I was 10 or 11."
Production manager Sarah Van Asperen said the producers were impressed with the talent of the whole cast.
"It's not your average musical and it has something for everyone. Between the members of the cast there is a lot of experience, and Vickie will make a fantastic Dorothy."
The society had wanted to put on a show that involved children as well as adults.
It will be performed at the Balclutha War Memorial Hall from August 3 to 6.
