Balclutha artist Lachlan Young, who makes latch hook rugs, has been chosen to display his work in Wellington later this month.

He submitted an entry to the 2013 IHC Art Awards in Dunedin last month in the Community Gallery, where it joined 164 other entries from the South Island.

The rug, called Big Blue Eyes is one of 30 art works to be displayed in a national exhibition at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington on August 29.

Mr Young (29), who lives in supported accommodation in Balclutha, will attend the exhibition with his mother Bev.

The artworks will be auctioned on the night, with all proceeds going to the artists.

Voting for the people's choice award opened yesterday.
