''Dusty'' Murtagh (left), of Lawrence, and conference advisory group co-ordinator Bronwyn Meads, of Bulls, meet in Balclutha yesterday before the Small Town Conference, where challenges facing small towns will be discussed.

This year's conference began in Balclutha last night, and continues today, with guest speakers on topics that range from asset-based community development to networking, youth, health and commerce.

Tonight, delegates will attend the ''Taste of Clutha Dinner'', featuring local products and produce.

The conference is held annually and alternates between the North and South Islands.

It gives small towns an opportunity to come together to share ideas, gain inspiration and promote their communities.

Clutha District Council community support and development adviser Jean Proctor said the conference boasted a great line-up of inspirational speakers and provided networking opportunities.

The conference, which finishes tomorrow afternoon, also includes field trips to Milton, Tapanui, the Catlins and Lawrence.
