Happy to be heading south

South Otago High School's new principal is excited to be moving back to a place he considers home.

It was announced yesterday that Mike Wright (53) will leave his role as principal at Opihi College, Temuka, to take up the role in Balclutha next year.

Mr Wright had worked as deputy principal at Tokomairiro High School in Milton and moved to Temuka four years ago.

He told the Otago Daily Times had a great affinity with the Otago region and considered it home.

''I'm actually looking forward to seeing some green hills and being back in a community I've enjoyed being with in the past.''

This was a chance to reconnect with friends and family he had left behind.

He believed he had made significant progress at Opihi College over the past four years and hoped he could do the same down south.

''I intend to bring the same skills and attributes to continue on with the great progress to take South Otago High School into the future.

''I know education is really strongly valued down there.''

He said he would need to learn the culture of the school and meet the expectations of the community.

Mr Wright will move to Balclutha in the next few months with his wife and two of his children.

His family was excited about the move and his son, who was born in Dunedin, looked forward to having his birthday at Moana Pool next year, Mr Wright said.
