You had better watch out Balclutha, because Santa Claus is coming to town and he might be bringing some special guests.

The Balclutha Santa Parade was not held last year but organisers are confident the return of the community event this year could be the biggest yet.

Clutha District Council community support and development adviser Jean Proctor said residents were disappointed there was no parade last year so she made it her goal to bring it back.

She said she was impressed by work so far and by the way volunteers had got involved.

About 25 floats will head down Clyde St for the big Balclutha parade on December 5.

''It's been a really great example of the community coming together.''

She hinted a few ''special celebrities'' might appear in the parade, but could not confirm who they might be.

''We're just waiting to see if it can happen.''

Mrs Proctor expected the floats to be ''exceptional''. Previous years had had some ''top notch'' entries.

Vannessa Joass, the activity co-ordinator for float entrant Holmdene Rest Home, said residents were excited they could take part on their own float.

They always liked to get out and be involved in the community.

Residents would ride mobility scooters dressed as reindeer ahead of a van made to look like a sleigh.

''If I tell you too much more ... it won't be a surprise,'' Mrs Joass said.

The Big River Bikers will bring Santa to the parade after riding through South Otago collecting food items to be given to the Salvation Army foodbank.

There would also be a market and circus entertainment. including jugglers and a balloon artist.
