Plans for an indoor sports facility in central Balclutha
were unanimously endorsed at a public meeting in the town on
Thursday night.
Detailed images and concept plans for the Clutha Recreation
Centre were tabled and outlined at the meeting, which was
attended by more than 50 people representing sports and
recreation groups. The sports facility will be built on the
site of Dreaver Courts next to the main Balclutha
sportsfields.
Clutha Recreation Centre Inc secretary Irene Mosley said the
presentation outlined the background and work the committee
had done since being formed in 2005.
Architect Phil Gilchrist and structural engineer John Heenan
also spoke.
Mrs Mosley said the group was keen to keep costs under $5
million but the overwhelming message from the meeting was
that the facility should be "be done once and be done right".
"The end result was unanimous support for the group to
proceed with the aim of getting as much funding as possible
so that the facilities can incorporate as many sports as
possible," she said.
Plans for the facility can be seen online at www.projectclutha.co.nz.
