Farmers in Clutha are
being warned by police to keep a close eye on their stock,
after three separate incidents of wandering stock were
reported recently.
Police deal with similar incidents on a weekly basis and
Sergeant Martin Bull, of Balclutha, is concerned a serious
crash may one day happen.
A ewe and a lamb were found wandering near Stirling, a cow
was on the state highway near Peggydale south of Balclutha,
and a dead sheep was found on the state highway just north of
Milburn, all in the space of three days.
Sgt Bull said all three incidents had the potential to cause
serious crashes.
Farmers needed to realise they had responsibilities to keep
their stock well fenced and contained.
They could be legally and financially culpable if police
could prove they were negligent in that respect.
"We just want farmers to make a special effort to ensure
their stock are fenced correctly and to minimise the chances
of them getting out and on to roads."
