Recycling has just become easier for Clutha residents, with
the opening of a recycling drop-off centre yesterday at the
Mt Cooee landfill, near Balclutha.
Jules Witt, manager district assets for the Clutha District
Council, said the centre would accept glass, plastic (types 1
and 2), aluminium, steel tins, paper and cardboard.
There is no cost involved in using the centre.
Clutha Mayor Juno Hayes, who opened the new facility, said
the drop-off centre was a quantum leap forward for Balclutha.
"It's about educating people. We need to cut down on the
amount of stuff going into the landfill."
The drop-off facility is part of the council's waste
minimisation initiative, and similar drop-off centres are
being considered for Milton, Lawrence and Tapanui.
