Report on pools revamp praised

A report recommending new investment in Dunedin's pools will be scrutinised by a working party established by the Dunedin City Council.

The report from consultants SGL Group New Zealand Ltd, responding to public submissions to the council, was tabled at yesterday's community development committee meeting.

It recommended investment in cafes and "wellness" spas at Moana Pool and the St Clair Hot Salt Water Pool, and regular fee increases above the consumer price index to boost revenue from visitors.

The report also identified overcrowding, conflicting uses and a shortage of parking at peak times as causes for concern, and suggested new pools at Mosgiel - replacing the existing ageing facility - and a training pool at Forsyth Barr Stadium.

Cr John Bezett, speaking at yesterday's committee meeting, praised the consultants' work as a "very useful first step" and said more investment in the city's pools was needed, fuelled by the switch from recreational swimming to swim training.

"There's no question about that ... There's a real need for the city to upgrade their aquatic services, no question."

Councillors voted to form a working party comprising two councillors and two staff to consider the report.
