Dan Benn had no qualms about having his father Brian on his dodgeball team: he hoped his experience would give his "Off in the Woods" team an edge.

Mr Benn (50), better known as a senior sergeant in the Dunedin Police, joined 18-year-olds Dan, Matt Batchelor and Nick Wyatt to compete in the National Dodgeball Series at the Gardens Tavern, in Dunedin, on Saturday.

"He has experience and showed some good dodging skills," Dan said.

The event attracted 26 teams of four players.

"I took a couple of head shots for the team - they couldn't get my body though," Mr Benn said.

Seven heats have been held throughout the country as organisers seek seven players to form the Black Keas to compete in the 2010 Dodgeball World Championships in Las Vegas.

Event spokeswoman Monique Aitchison said players were judged on their skill, showmanship, sportsmanship and "smarts", and one player from each of the seven events was chosen for the Black Keas.

Johnny Moodie (25) was the Dunedin selection to join the team, she said.
