The Otago Farmers Market's ethos of sustainability makes
it the perfect place to launch Dunedin's public places
recycling stations.
The Dunedin City Council initiative will result in three
stations, each with separate bins for organic waste
collection, mixed recycling and non-recyclables, being
installed at the market next Saturday.
Waste strategy officer Cath Irvine said the stations had been
trialled at the Thieves Alley market day and Orientation, and
placing them permanently at the market was the first stage of
introducing them throughout the city.
Market trust chairman Paul Crack said the stations were in
keeping with the market's waste-minimisation policy and were
backed by stallholders.
"By the end of 2011, we should have an entirely
waste-minimised site, which means everything should be
recyclable or compostible," he said.
For the first three weeks of operation, Burns District Girl
Guides, Brownies and Pippins will be on hand to show people
how to use them correctly.
