A large rabbit took over Sergeant Dave Scott's office after being rescued from a busy central Dunedin street on Sunday night.

The runaway bunny spent the night at the Dunedin Central police station after a security guard spotted it in the middle of Princes St in the city centre and dropped it off to police just after 11pm.

By the time the SPCA arrived to collect it at 10.15am yesterday, the affable rabbit had won over the ladies, toured the station, left Sgt Scott a little present on the floor and narrowly avoided featuring in the morning prisoner line-up.

An SPCA spokeswoman said the adult Flemish giant rabbit was "a little skinnier than we would have liked", so might have been on the hop for some time.

Its owner was still unknown last night.
