Santa Claus is coming to town.

The 2010 Dunedin Santa Parade on Sunday will have more than 80 floats, the largest contingent in the history of the event, Santa Parade Trust chairman Dean Driver said yesterday.

"We're really looking forward to it. It's always a fantastic day and it happens because of all the fantastic support we get from Dunedin community groups and schools," he said.

The 13th parade will be the first without founding chairman Malcolm Dodds, who set up the event in 1998, with Dunedin broadcaster Peter Mac.

Mr Dodds emigrated to Australia three weeks ago and has been succeeded by Mr Driver, who has served on the trust board for the past six years.

An estimated 40,000 people lined the streets for last year's parade.

Parade participants will begin assembling in George St, between Howe and Regent Sts, from 9am on Sunday.

The parade will start at 3pm, travelling along George St, and through the Octagon, before turning left into Moray Pl, where it will disperse.

A concert will be held in the Octagon after the parade.

The following streets will be closed between 2pm and 8pm: George St, between the Octagon and Duke St; Titan St; Princes St, between the Octagon and Moray Pl; Harrop St; upper and lower Stuart St, between the Octagon and Moray Pl.
