Garden preparation teacher Peta Hudson, of Otago Peninsula, showed volunteers how to create a no-dig garden using hay and cardboard at the North East Valley Community Garden working bee on Saturday morning.

Community garden convener Richard Tozer said it was the first of regular community working bees at the garden, which is at North East Valley Normal School on a rise above the school buildings.

It was hoped pupils would become involved with the community project. The fledgling garden had been well supported with community grants, donated equipment and interest from residents.
