Painstaking restoration

Stained glass window artist Peter Mackenzie trims some of the stained glass panels he has made for the refurbishment of William Larnach's tomb in Dunedin's Northern Cemetery.

Mr Mackenzie has spent a year painstakingly creating replicas of the original windows, using materials sourced from France and Australia. The originals had been destroyed by vandals, and it had taken a five-year hunt to track down architect R.A Lawson's original designs, as photographs had not given close detail, Mr Mackenzie said.

The intricate and condensed nature of their design made the project the most complex and satisfying he had worked on. The windows expressed the "incredible narrative" of the Larnach family, he said.

Nearly completed, the windows would be fitted into place over the coming weeks, as part of the wider refurbishment of the tomb.
