Dunedin motorcycle riders recapturing their youth after their "family years" got a lesson in how to ride more safely yesterday, as the Ride Right Otago course was kick-started for another riding season.

Instructor Julie Ashton said a lot of people who came to the courses, which were designed to increase the skills of riders with an intermediate level of experience, had been motorcycle enthusiasts when they were younger.

With more time and money after the years of family-raising, riders had returned to motorcycling, and were turning up to safety courses.

Funded by ACC and run by the Otago Motorcycle Club and Bikers Rights Organisation of New Zealand (Bronz), the courses have been beingoperated for 18 months.

Ms Ashton said the courses began after ACC saw a need to reduce the number of motorcycle crashes, and liaised with the two clubs to run the courses.

With more new riders on scooters to cut commuting costs since fuel prices increased, there were plenty of people on the road who would benefit from the courses, she said.

All instructors were volunteers, and the day-long courses provided practical and theoretical work in skills such as cornering and braking that would produce motorcyclists who were more confident and aware of safety issues.
