DCC prepares case for Govt stadium funding

Details of possible Government infrastructure funding for the Otago Stadium will not be clear until early next year, but the Dunedin City Council plans to make the most of the situation.

The Government announced recently it would inject about $7 billion into the economy over two years, and part of that would go to infrastructure projects.

Finance Minister Bill English said in Queenstown last week no money had been set aside for the stadium project, but he indicated it might sit within the criteria for top priority projects the Government was looking to fund, and he was expecting an approach.

Deputy mayor Syd Brown said yesterday "it would have to be the city" that made the funding request, rather than the Carisbrook Stadium Trust, as it was an infrastructure issue.

"That would be my view."

Cr Brown said there had not been discussions yet on the request for funding, but the possibility did not come up very often.

"We'll be putting our heads together pretty quickly."

A spokesman from Mr English's office said yesterday it had not yet been decided how decisions on the funding would be made.

But there would be "more clarity" on the issue early in the new year.

Trust chairman Malcolm Farry could not be contacted yesterday
