It might have been the "gals" stripping down the engines but they was no less intense than the blokes, in the grudge match between Ford and Holden enthusiasts on Saturday.

The Australian Show and Shine Day at Turners Auction building, in Dunedin, attracted hundreds of enthusiasts to look at the Australian-made cars.

Nearly 50 Fords, Holdens and Chryslers, of various ages and models were at the event organised by the Holden Enthusiasts Club.

Organiser Desiree Colson said the grudge matches, where teams of three from the Holden, Ford and Mopar clubs stripped down and reassembled engines, proved popular.

Holden teams were the winners - the men in 32 minutes and the women in one hour nine minutes. Members later went driving.
