One hundred and sixteen people were arrested in Dunedin during the first ten days of this year, with 34 of them during the weekend.
Senior Sergeant Trevor Thomson said police had been "reasonably busy" for this time of year and he described the behaviour of people in Central Dunedin at the weekend as "disappointing".
Arrests from midnight Friday to midnight Sunday were for a variety of disorder and assault offences, including an assault on a police officer in the Octagon.
An 18-year-old man was arrested at 3am on Saturday after punching a police officer after he was spoken to for drinking wine out of a bladder in a liquor ban area, Snr Sgt Thomson said.
The officer was unhurt.
"He was on the street causing disorder and calling abuse as the police officers drove past."
The next night, a 19-year-old was arrested after pushing people outside McDonalds restaurant in George St about 4am and another 19-year-old was arrested after pulling his pants down in the middle of Princes St at a similar time, he said.
About an hour later, a 20-year-old was arrested after allegedly punching a man outside the Southern Break bar on Great King St.
In another incident, a 20-year-old male was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon after allegedly threatening another man with a screwdriver in Statham St, Brockville.
Other arrests were for offences including shoplifting and domestic incidents. rebecca.fox@odt.co.nz
