Big Brother is watching, and now you can too. Dunedin's first
traffic webcams will help motorists avoid traffic jams rather
than monitor poor driving behaviour, New Zealand Transport
Agency Otago/Southland regional director Bruce Richards said.
Dunedin's first traffic webcam, at the intersection of
State Highway 1 and Andersons Bay Rd, went live last
week.Photo by Linda Robertson.
The cameras, which were installed late last year at the
intersection of State Highway 1 and Andersons Bay Rd, went live
last week.
The site was chosen because the area records up to 25,000 car
movements a day - the busiest in Dunedin, he said.
"They let people see traffic conditions for themselves at
busy locations like Andersons Bay Rd. Based on what they see,
they can make an informed decision about whether to travel or
not, especially during peak traffic times," Mr Richards said.
One of the cameras will face southwards down the Caversham
Highway, and the other will monitor traffic along Andersons
Bay Rd.
The cameras, which cost a total of $20,000, may be moved to
other city sites, he said.
