More than $100,000 has been granted over the past 25 years,
by the Waianakarua Lions Moeraki fishing competition, mostly
to East Otago and North Otago organisations.
This year's competition, held last Saturdayafter being
delayed two weeks because of rough seas at Easter, attracted
40 boats. Funds raised this year are going to fire brigades
at Hampden and Kakanui.
Waianakarua Lions president Dean Thelning, of Herbert, said
usually 80 to 90 boats took part.
The average grant made by the Lions club from competition
proceeds was $5000, but last year $14,000 was granted to the
Christchurch earthquake appeal.
