A local woman snapped up the top prize at the Glenorchy fishing competition on Saturday.

Catching a 1.7kg brown trout netted Glenorchy's Hayley Jones the overall win at the annual fundraiser, which attracted 164 entries - some from as far away as Hokitika.

Palmerston's Alison Joyce had second-best fish at 1.39kg, while the best man's catch was Lachie Davidson, of Ashburton, with a 1.33kg brown trout.

Palmerston's Max Joyce (10) won best junior-child category fish, with a 0.86kg catch. The Joyces also took the best family catch.

Best local catch went to the Veint/Scott family.

In the hard-luck category, Jackie Bishop dropped in her 5-day-old iPhone 6S, and Glenorchy's Allannah Walker (13) dived off the wharf to go after a snagged lure.

The event raised $2600 for the Glenorchy School Parents Teachers And Friends Association.
