Christchurch designer Robyn Webb won The Ensign Award of
Excellence at the Peugeot Hokonui Fashion Design Awards over
the weekend.
Miss Webb has a Gore connection - her father, Trevor Webb,
lived in Gore until 13 years ago.
Miss Webb, a third-year student at the Christchurch
Polytechnic Institute of Technology, was too busy completing
a design for her diploma in fashion technology and design
course to make the trip to Gore.
On Saturday night, she won the Streetwear Award with a black
and white minidress underneath a knitted tunic, black
leggings and a knitted black hat. Ms Webb won the Wool Award
in 2007 with a merino felt tunic. Miss Webb's prize package
is worth $10,000, including $6000 cash, $1000 worth of travel
and three months' use of a Peugeot car.
She is planning a trip to Australia.
"I'm not leaving New Zealand - I will always live here," Miss
Webb said. "It is tough getting work here though, because my
fellow students are of such a high standard."
Gore designers won two of the eight sections - Andre Tamblyn
won the Westpac Denim Award with a denim minidress and
Christine Webb won the Kiwiana Award with a dairy-themed
blazer and miniskirt.
Other section winners were Alanah Gibson (Wellington),
Knitted Award; Megan Woodhouse (Christchurch), Wool Award;
Sophie Hardy (Invercargill), Menswear Award; Hollie Perniskie
(Otago Polytechnic School of Fashion, Dunedin), Collections
Award; and Alexandra Kneebone (Auckland), Nightlife Award.
Nicole Hamilton of the Otago Polytechnic School of Fashion
took away the award for the Garment with Most Commercial
Appeal, Southland Designer of the Year is Sophie Hardy of
Invercargill and the Young Designer Award went to Grace Baker
of New Plymouth.
Awards executive producer Heather Paterson said she was
delighted at the event's success.
