The Gore District Council may get tough on wandering dogs.
This week, the council's regulatory and planning committee
recommended the dog control bylaw be amended to give the
council authority to have a dog desexed if it was caught
wandering more than once in a 12-month period.
The dog's owner would have to pay for the operation.
Dog control working party chairwoman Cr Nicky Davis said the
council needed to send a strong message that it was not
desirable to have dogs repeatedly roaming the streets.
The proposed amendment would give the council's dog control
officer the ability to be more forceful, but the wording of
the amendment would enable the dog control officer to
exercise some discretion, she said.
