An elderly Gore woman got the fright of her life when she
accidentally reversed her car through a large window into a
Gore restaurant yesterday morning.
The woman had planned to park her car in the Gore and
Districts Memorial RSA car park while she went to the bank,
but inadvertently ended up in the restaurant.
Constable Chris McAnally said it appeared the woman, who was
driving an automatic sedan, had her foot on the accelerator
instead of the brake, and then put the car into reverse.
The car went backwards for about 10m, crashing through the
large window before stopping in the restaurant.
Gore and Districts Memorial RSA bar manager Tanya Kirk had
just opened the clubrooms before the crash, which happened
about 10.40am.
"There was a loud bang and I thought [RSA manager] Graeme
[Soper] had fallen through the roof."
Miss Kirk tended to the elderly woman, encouraging her to
stay in the car until emergency services arrived.
"I sat with her and held her hand through the window and got
her information. She was fully aware but in shock, and she
was really worried about the damage she had done to the
building," Miss Kirk said.
Once help arrived, the woman, a member of the RSA, was helped
from her car.
She was not injured.
Mr Soper said the damage would be covered by insurance.
The restaurant, with the window boarded up, was open for
business last night.
Const McAnally said it was too early to say whether charges
would be laid.
