Fashion fever has gripped Haast this week as locals rush to complete their outfits in time for the community's first Creative Fashion Show to be held on September 23.

The fundraising event will benefit the Haast School and Haast Playgroup, each of which has 13 enrolled children.

The event has attracted 43 entries so far, including 23 from the school and preschool.

Co-organiser and mother of two Rachel Norton this week said she was thrilled by the response and she imagined garments would be very down-to-earth and feature "camo" and fur.

"I was a bit worried, but being Haast, I knew everything would come in at the last minute. It will be fun ... So many people have got together and done their costumes," Mrs Norton said.

The school and preschool sections will not be judged. They will be paraded by pupils before the community section of the awards commences.

Haast School and preschool are among the most remote in New Zealand and struggle with isolation, lack of opportunities for children, and raising funds.

The school is raising money to pay for $10,000 worth of technology equipment so pupils and others in the community can undertake long-distance learning programmes, video conferences, and meetings with other schools and communities.

Haast School board of trustees chairwoman and mother of two, Anita Freer said the community was affected by the transient nature of tourism and whitebaiting, and the decline of the traditional workforce in roading, farming and fishing.

"It is difficult to meet the annual costs of the day-to-day running of the school, let alone for any other activities. The board of trustees fund extra teaching time for the junior class but this takes money away from other areas of the school," Mrs Freer said.

The decision to buy the technology equipment followed a free trial earlier this year which was hugely successful, she said.
