The public is being invited to comment on a proposal to
build whitewater-kayaking structures in the Hawea River bed,
along with the construction of a car park, access and toilet on
Department of Conservation land at 173 Camphill Rd.
Central Otago Whitewater Inc and the New Zealand Recreational
Canoeing Association has applied for notified resource
consents from the Queenstown Lakes District Council for the
activities.
The project forms part of a collection of mitigation measures
agreed with Contact Energy, following the recent renewal of
that company's electricity generation resource consents.
The project would meet a need for grade 2-3 whitewater
kayaking features in Otago, including surfing waves, eddies
and eddy lines.
An elevated rock band will be constructed across the
riverbed, rock structures will be placed at the side of the
river and rock rip-rap will be placed directly on the bed and
against the banks.
The Otago Regional Council has already granted the
appropriate water, discharge and land use consents.
Further information is available from the Queenstown Lakes
District Council and Lakes Environmental offices in Wanaka
and Queenstown.
Public submissions must be received before the closing date
on August 13.
