The Lake Hawea sewer is under pressure and likely to overflow
during high rainfalls, so the Queenstown Lakes District
Council is keen to talk to property owners next month about
ways to reduce the problem.
Early next month, council engineers Martin Ellis and Mark
Gendell will contact those Lake Hawea property owners where
better storm water solutions could be introduced.
The measures should be relatively simple and cost $150-$600,
3 Waters manager Gerry Essenberg said in an update to the
Lake Hawea Community Association this week.
The most common problem is with gulley traps being lower than
ground level, which allows storm water to drain into foul
water drainage on the property and then the sewer, resulting
in an overload at the sewage treatment facilities.
Some storm water down pipes and other drains are also
discharging into the foul drainage system.
The association will meet on January 9 at the Lake Hawea
Community Centre at 10am to discuss the sewers, storm water
solutions and the council's draft management plan for the
lake shore.
The meeting is open to the public.
