Man remanded in custody over death of woman in Invercargill

Invercargill police have named the woman killed in an Invercargill hostel on Saturday morning.

She was Nicola Jean Fleming (38), a resident at the Haven Accommodation Hostel in Tyne St.

Yesterday, a visibly upset unemployed man appeared before Judge Michael Turner in the Invercargill District Court.

The 30-year-old man, who was granted interim name suppression, faces a charge of murder.

No application for bail was made, and he was remanded in custody to February 27.

Judge Turner said the interim suppression order would be reviewed at the man's next court appearance.

Yesterday, police confirmed the man was known to Ms Fleming.

Inspector Olaf Jensen, of Invercargill, said 25 staff were working on the case.

A forensic examination at the hostel, including the room where the victim was living, was expected to be finished tomorrow. A postmortem was completed yesterday.

Ms Fleming's next of kin had been informed of her death and family members were being supported by Victim Support.

Invercargill police are still keen to hear from members of the public who were in the Otepuni Gardens and Tyne St area at 4am-5am on Saturday. People with any information are urged to call Invercargill police on (03) 211-0400 or anonymously via the Crimestoppers line 0800 555-111.
