Camp and neighbours enter mediation

The future of the Kakanui Camp remains with the Environment Court as owners of a neighbouring property and the camp's owner work through a mediation process aimed at resolving outstanding issues to avoid a full hearing.

Camping ground owner Equipment and Support Ltd, owned Allan and Christine Jones, has been attempting to get resource consent to establish and operate visitor accommodation on the 1.23ha Waianakarua Rd site. The issue dates back more than 15 years.

Last year, independent commissioner Robert Nixon, on behalf of the Waitaki District Council, granted consent, subject to conditions.

However, in July, immediate neighbours Robert and Linda Hildeman, who have opposed the camping ground wanting conditions to protect their property, appealed the council's decision.

Council planning manager David Campbell said when contacted mediation was being held to work through possible conditions aimed at resolving the appeal. That would avoid the need for a full hearing.

He did not know when that process could be completed.

Mr and Mrs Hildeman appealed the council's decision on the grounds that the conditions imposed did not adequately address actual and potential adverse effects of the activity on them and their property.

The appeal was against conditions - including an acoustic fence between the two properties, the number of camping sites and persons and vehicles that can occupy each site - not the granting of consent.

Consent was granted for full capacity of powered and unpowered camping sites with access to Waianakarua Rd.
