Flyer firing up for late October start

The Kingston Flyer's whistle will be heard on the Kingston to Fairlight railway by the end of October, according to owner David Bryce, who will be meeting the new operations team today.

Since the Flyer was bought and taken out of receivership two weeks ago, the train has undergone extensive inspections and preparation for firing up at the end of October.

Mr Bryce told the Otago Daily Times yesterday "things are progressing and a team have been assessing the engine to get it up and running".

Land Transport New Zealand was well into the process of licensing of the train, a driver has been employed and last week track maintenance began.

Keith Simpson, of Timaru, will drive the train. His wife, Diane, will be the tourist venture's administrator.

The pair have moved to Kingston and meet Mr Bryce and newly appointed operations manager Russell Glendinning today.

Mr Glendinning had driven the train for many years before the operator Kingston Acquisitions Ltd went into receivership in November 2009 owing Prudential Mortgage $4.7 million.
