The best ploughmen and ploughwomen in Otago and Southland were unearthed in Middlemarch yesterday.

A qualifying competition on a grazing block in Moonlight Rd revealed who would represent the South in the vintage and horse classes at the nationals in Palmerston North in April next year.

Competition organiser Sean Leslie said 19 competitors ploughed in the four championship classes: five in the conventional class, six in the vintage, two in reversible and two in the horse.

Another four ploughmen competed in the classic, a non-championship class.

The Southern representatives for the vintage and horse classes were decided yesterday.

The competitors representing the South in the vintage class were Alistair Rutherford, of Gore, and Murray Grainger, of Mosgiel.

The competitors representing the South in the horse class were John Chynoweth and Sharon Chambers, both of Kakanui, and Mr Leslie and Kaye Walker, both of Middlemarch.

Mr Leslie said the competitors enjoyed ploughing the grass block yesterday, rather than the usual competition block, which had been ploughed before.

A grass block was more challenging to plough because it was harder to hide a mistake.

''A grass block shows every mistake, big time. It makes a big mess if you get it wrong,'' Mr Leslie said.

Mr Chynoweth (57) said he was ''pleased'' with the winning performance of his team, including his Clydesdale horses, 5-year-old Flash and 6-year-old Blue.

His teammate Sharon Chambers said the horses ploughed for the first time in May and had adapted easily to the work.

''They are quite at home with it,'' she said.
