New Zealand Windfarms Ltd has lodged an application to build
a small wind farm on one of the highest points in the Clutha
district after spending most of this year investigating the
site.
The Clutha District Council received the resource consent
application last Friday and it appears it will not be
publicly notified as the company already has permission from
the only affected landowner.
The company wants to construct nine turbines on a ridgeline
of Mt Stuart, about 10km west of Milton.
The development would supply electricity to a small band of
communities inland from that town.
No other details of the consent application were available
yesterday as the company had yet to lodge its full
application.
In April, it was granted consent to install a 30m-high
monitoring mast on the site which stands 411m above sea
level.
Information collected from that mast was used to help guide
the company towards a decision on whether to build the wind
farm there.
Initial investigations revealed the site had significant
wind-generation potential.
