Flood-risk concern inquiry

Concerns from the Mosgiel community about potential flood risks to low-lying areas around Quarry Creek at East Taieri will be investigated by both the city and regional councils.

The Mosgiel Taieri Community Board had approached the Dunedin City Council and Otago Regional Council about the flooding problems around Gow St, Gladstone Rd and Cemetery Rd.

Representatives from all three groups met last month on site to discuss the issues.

Community board chairman Bill Feather said for many years flooding during heavy rain had caused problems for the area's industry and the East Taieri School.

Water entered some properties and flooding at the entry to Cemetery Rd sometimes required the school be shut, he said.

"We wanted to bring some sort of attention to this and to the possibility development on Saddle Hill-Chain Hill could cause the situation to get worse before it gets better."

The board asked the councils to look at the drainage and flood systems closely to see if anything could be done.

"We're waiting now to see what they come back with."

Regional council environmental engineering and hazards director Gavin Palmer said the flooding had been an issue since the 1970s and modifications to the creek over the years around property boundaries had probably contributed to the problem.

The council would look at what could be done and develop a "ball park" cost estimate for any work.

That could mean anything from substantial channel improvement work, a detention-type option or just "living with it", he said.

Few people would benefit from such work, so the cost could be prohibitive.
