More delay on Riccarton Rd

Riccarton Rd residents will have to wait longer for a final outcome to roading issues in the area, with a delay in funding continuing a debate that has been going on for up to 15 years.

Cr Andrew Noone said yesterday he had had some failures in his life, and not being able to resolve that issue was "in the top five".

The council confirmed in February a bridle path should be built on Riccarton Rd, beginning in the next financial year, and that the road be widened in the next 10 years.

The Centre St-Carncross St link was confirmed at the time as the preferred eastern arterial route for the Taieri, with funding included in the 2018-19 year.

Last week, residents told the committee they opposed those plans.

Cr Noone said yesterday the upgrade of Riccarton Rd could not go ahead until planning processes and notices of requirement to acquire necessary land there were complete.

The committee yesterday voted to spend about $180,000 in the next financial year and $184,000 in 2010-11 on preliminary work for Riccarton Rd, and almost $3 million in the following two years on construction.

Cr Kate Wilson raised her concerns people in the area did not think they were being heard, or listened to, but Mayor Peter Chin disagreed.

"In trying to be all things to everybody, we are being nothing to anybody," he said.

Cr Noone said in two years, the council might have another look at the bridle path proposal.
