Respect for landowners and users, access to Pilots Beach, and
protection for archeological and heritage features have
emerged as some of the main issues as a plan for the future
management of Pukekura (Taiaroa Head) is prepared for public
hearings.
A hearing will be held on Wednesday for the nine submissions
received in response to an appeal for public input.
The draft Pukekura reserves management plan was approved for
public consultation in August, after a Dunedin City Council
vote at a meeting at the Otakou marae.
The issue has a long history.
The Dunedin City Council and the Department of Conservation
are responsible for aspects of its management under various
government Acts.
Both the Korako Karetai Trust and Te Runanga o Otakou have a
historic interest in the area, and the two groups joined to
initiate the plan process.
Along with the council and Doc, they formed the Pukekura
working group to develop the plan.
Groups which will present submissions include the Otago
Peninsula Trust, Public Access New Zealand, the Otago
Peninsula Community Board and the Otago Regional Council.
