A house in Daly St, Port Chalmers, was destroyed by fire yesterday - although nobody was home at the time.

The cause of the fire, which gutted the wooden villa at the Harrington St end of Daly St, was unknown last night, but police were not treating it as suspicious.

The fire was well established when volunteer brigades from Port Chalmers and Ravensbourne arrived just after 5.40pm.

Police said the occupant was not at home at the time of the fire.
