Every morning Steve Walker walks to the end of his drive
and peers in the bushes opposite in search of rubbish. Finding
none makes him smile.
The Port Chalmers Community Board chairman approached the
Otago Daily Times last week about a serial rubbish
dumper in Port Chalmers who was in the habit of discarding
household rubbish in the same spot on Victory Pl.
Once an article about the activities appeared in the
ODT, the dumping stopped "immediately", he said.
"It's wonderful. I hope it lasts."
Coverage of the issue also prompted others in the area to be
more vigilant about rubbish dumping, he said.
Council solid waste contracts supervisor Peter Moroney said a
"no dumping" sign would still be erected on the site.
