Labour Minister Kate Wilkinson is preparing a cabinet paper
to present her recommendations on the adventure tourism
review to Parliament.
The review was ordered by Prime Minister John Key, who is
also Minister of Tourism, in September 2009, after he
received a letter from the father of Emily Jordan, the
21-year-old English tourist who drowned during a
riverboarding trip in April 2008.
The review has been overseen by a steering group comprising
representatives from the Department of Labour, Ministry of
Transport, Civil Aviation Authority, Tourism Industry
Association, Maritime New Zealand, ACC, the Queenstown Lakes
District Council, the Department of Conservation and Outdoors
New Zealand.
The first report released in February gave an overview of the
industry after consultation with operators.
The final report from the Labour Department was handed to Ms
Wilkinson on June 10 and she said she would consider the
findings before giving her recommendations.
A spokesman for Ms Wilkinson said on July 6 no specific date
had been set for the discussion of the review in cabinet, but
it was expected to take place within a few weeks.
