A report from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) into the
deaths of two hang-gliders in Queenstown last year has been
received by Southern region coroner David Crerar, but no
decision has been made about an inquest.
Gerardo Bean (27), an Argentine hang-gliding pilot, and his
passenger, Andrew Michael Scotland (34), a volunteer
firefighter from Waipu, were both killed on impact on March
10 last year when the hang-glider crashed into a paddock near
the Remarkables, after the men took off from an area known as
the Knoll on the Remarkables access road.
The CAA investigated the incident and has sent its report to
Mr Crerar.
Coronial Services co-ordinator Gary Binney, of Dunedin, told
the Otago Daily Times Mr Crerar had the "option" of not
holding a public inquest, depending on what the CAA's report
found.
